CNDH to conduct broad consultation with the different stakeholders on abortion legal framework

With or against.., Pro-life vs. pro-choice… Abortion has recently sparked a broad and heated national debate in Morocco. Human rights defenders, religious scholars, government officials, stakeholders and individuals of all walks of life are debating and arguing their choice. The CNDH, as a national human rights institution, was involved in the debate, from the very beginning, defending and arguing for the principles and values of international human rights law.

Yesterday, March 16, His Majesty King Mohammed VI gave his instructions to Mr. Driss El Yazami, CNDH Chairman, the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, and the Minister of Justice and Freedoms, in the Royal Palace of Casablanca, to further reflect on clandestine abortion, which has became a medical issue ‘par excellence’.

His majesty insisted on conducting broad meetings and consultations with all the stakeholders concerned, in collaboration with the Higher Council of Ulema (religious scholars). The final proposals to address clandestine abortion will be submitted within a month.

In a subsequent press statement, Mr. El Yazami said that the CNDH will conduct a series of consultations with NGOs, institutions and stakeholders concerned, for public and collective reflection about the possible ways to reform the legal provisions on abortion and clandestine abortion.
