National Seminar on “The Gender Approach in the Process of Transitional Justice in Morocco: Current Situation and Prospects”

As part of the implementation of the recommendations of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) particularly as regards the promotion of women’s rights, and in partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Advisory Council on Human Rights (CCDH) organizes a national seminar on November 25, 2008 in Rabat under the theme of "Gender Approach in the Process of Transitional Justice in Morocco: Current Situation and Prospects".

The seminar, which is an opportunity for different stakeholders involved in implementing the IER recommendations to think about and analyze the degree of taking the gender into account in the Moroccan experience and ways to improve that concern, aims to:

1. Assess the degree of mainstreaming the gender in the implementation of the IER recommendations in general and in the community reparation program in particular;

2. Explore the ways of mainstreaming gender in the process of transitional justice in Morocco;

3. Identify ways to improve taking the gender into account in following up the IER recommendations.

The opening of the seminar proceedings, held at 9:00 am at the Hotel Tour Hassan, Rabat, will be chaired by Mr. Ahmed Herzenni, CCDH President, and Ms. Zineb Touimi Benjelloun, UNIFEM Regional Director for North Africa. The proceedings revolve around three main themes: gender and transitional justice process in Morocco, gender and memory, and gender and reparation.

Also, it worth mentioning that the CCDH in partnership with the UNIFEM, is currently developing a strategy for mainstreaming the gender approach in all the process of following up the IER recommendations, including community reparation programs. In this regard, a project on "promoting women’s rights and their role in the process of transitional justice in Morocco", was launched in April 2007 to test a pilot approach to mainstream gender in the process of Moroccan reconciliation.
