The International Symposium on gender and university: Education is the key lever for ensuring the ownership of human rights culture

The President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Ms. Amina Bouayach participated in the International Symposium on “Gender and the University-Shared Experiences towards Generalising Gender Studies” on 29 Mars 2019 in Rabat.

This international symposium was an opportunity to present two studies on gender and university in Morocco and Tunisia: Gender and University in Morocco, State of the arts, challenges and perspectives “Le Genre et l’université au Maroc: états des lieux, enjeux et perspectives” , UNESCO / Hassan II University of Casablanca-IRD, 2018. The second study is related to Gender Studies and Training in Tunisia, State of the arts and perspectives “Études et formation sur le genre en Tunisie: état des lieux et perspectives”, UNESCO / CREDIF, 2018.

The issue of women’s rights is one of the CNDH’s priorities and is part of its strategy.

Speaking at the opening session of this event, Mrs. Amina Bouayach underlined that the CNDH is aware that the biggest battle for equality is that for education. It is the key lever for ensuring the ownership of human rights culture and its frame of reference. She also stated that there will be no access to equality and no access to rights without access to knowledge.

The CNDH President said that although the legislative reforms and the establishment of the new mechanisms related to the protection of women’s rights, women are still discriminated against.

The official, economic, social and cultural data registered by the State indicates that the rate of active women is low, while 18% of heads of household are women working mainly in the informal sector.

Mrs. Bouayach indicated that studies and research on women’s rights and gender are at most importance for a reliable assessment of the reality nowadays.

She also stressed that the primary mission of human rights actors is to bring together the intellectual, political and institutional conditions so that gender perspective be incorporated in the normative framework programs.

This event was organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its partners.

Experts, researchers, professors, NGOs and other concerned stakeholders from Middle East, North Africa and Europe attended this International Symposium.
