Nador: Press Release, April 29, 2008

Within the scope of the investigations having been carried out by the Advisory Council on Human Rights (CCDH) in implementation of the recommendations of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) as regards the completion of the inquiries related to establishing the truth about the suspended cases of victims of social unrest, a CCDH delegation led by the CCDH President, Mr Ahmed Herzenni, headed, on April 29, 2008, for Nador, northeast of Morocco, to examine the place where human remains were discovered following an excavation operation in a barracks of Civil Protection.

The examination was conducted in the presence of the public prosecutor at the Nador Court of Appeal, local authorities and a forensic team.

The exhumation, which was carried out under the supervision of the general prosecution, the judicial police regional service and experts from scientific police, resulted in discovering 15 body remains which were transferred, in accordance with the instructions issued by the public prosecutor, to the morgue of Al Hassani Hospital, Nador, so that the forensic team can determine the identity of the victims and the real causes of their death, which strong presumption links them to the 1984 events.

It is worth mentioning that the Nador’s 1984 painful events was subject to the IER investigation which concluded that the number of victims during these events amounted to 16. The IER recommended that this investigation be pursued to identify the victims and pinpoint the places of burial.

In collaboration with the judicial and local authorities, the CCDH is following up closely the different ongoing phases and procedures, under the supervision of the public prosecution. The CCDH commits itself to informing the families of victims of the results when obtained.

On April 29, 2008,

Ahmed Herzenni, CCDH President
