Berlin: CNDH Chairperson participates in the 8th World Congress Against the Death Penalty

Abolitionists need tools, techniques and strategies to face the erroneous discourse of those against abolition, siad Mrs. Bouayach

A delegation of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) led by the Chairperson, Mrs. Amina Bouayach, is participating in the 8th World Congress Against the Death Penalty, which is taking place from 15 to 18 November 2022 in Berlin, Germany.

The Congress is organized by "Together Against the Death Penalty". This year, it brings together 1300 people (including 600 participating face-to-face) from 130 nationalities.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of this event in her capacity as a member of the Academic Committee of the Congress, Mrs. Bouayach highlighted the efforts of civil society aiming to better invest in public debates and raise its voice for the abolition of capital punishment.

The combat of civil society to abolish the death penalty is, first and foremost, an approach aiming at making the refusal of legal murder ubiquitous by emphasizing grey areas that legitimize revenge through the law, she stated.

The CNDH Chairperson affirmed that abolitionists need tools, techniques and strategies to face the erroneous discourse of those against abolition. They need to be able to guide the political actor out of hesitation and fear and lead them toward audacity, reason and humanism.

Mrs. Bouayach underscored that the 8th World Congress Against the Death Penalty is an exceptional and significant moment for the CNDH and all abolitionists to raise their voices against the death penalty as a universal movement for the protection of the fundamental right: the right to life.

This event is being held at a crucial moment: between the preliminary and the final vote for the moratorium on the use of the death penalty in the United Nations. Currently, 50 States still use the death penalty in the world, and 126 have signed the moratorium against the use of capital punishment.

This year, the global action will focus on young people to gather their voices and proposals. They will participate in workshops designed to stimulate collective intelligence. They will present their work, share their vision and exchange the best practices. Within this context, the CNDH supports two young artists Aya Imrani Jamali and Mahmoud Kaghat from the Casablanca School of Fine Arts who have contributed to the CNDH book entitled “Draw Me the Abolition”.

The CNDH delegation is composed of Mr. Mustapha Nejmi, adviser to the CNDH Chairperson, and Mrs. Amina Salhi, CNDH communications director. Mr. Nejmi will deliver a statement on National Human Rights Institutions, civil society and the fight to abolish the death penalty on 18 November 2022.
